There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Do you own tools you never use? God’s Word is a powerful tool, but profitless if it sits unused. Here’s a good passage for talking through with your kids, and applying to life. What does God particularly loathe or despise? Blanket answer: Rebellion against Him.
I’ll get your conversation started:
Haughty eyes: Pride in what I behold in my mirror: Today’s selfie, post-everything culture.
Lying tongue: “Truth? Let’s go with the “alternative facts” as I present them.”
Hands that shed innocent blood: Violence, cyber-bullying, abortion: any act that “disposes” of life. Situational ethics that go with the mob mentality; doing “as Romans do when in Rome.”
Heart that devises wicked plans: Fantasy and plots to get “my heart’s desire.”
Feet that run to evil: Anti-God entertainments and persons – queueing up to consume their wares.
False witness that lies: “#Guess what I just heard…”
One who spreads strife with brothers: “Do you want to be my friend? Then you can’t be his/her friend… Let’s destroy him/her together…” (ensuing carnage of texts, tweets, posts, snapchats, etc.)
Proverbs warns of destruction for fools who mock. Judgment’s a good reminder, even for those who are wearing a shell of Christianity over dead, unregenerate hearts. God is not fooled or impressed, and He is no liar. God has spoken, and we will live what we choose to believe; either to great reward, or great regret one day.
The Word. Don’t just own the tool. Put it to good use, each day.
